چکیده

The dielectrophoretic (DEP) separation of metallic and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has been investigated. DEP separation experiments were performed by following the previous reports and the modification of Raman spectra was confirmed. We then theoretically investigated the impact of the flow field on the dielectrophoretic separation. The electrothermal flow was found to control the motions of semiconducting SWNTs in a sizable domain near the electrodes under typical experimental conditions, therefore helping the dielectrophoretic force to attract semiconducting SWNTs in a broader range. It is shown that under some typical experimental conditions of dielectrophoretic separation of SWNTs, the electrothermal flow is a dominating factor in determining the motion of SWNTs.

Gel electrophoresis using a selective radical for the separation of single-walled carbon nanotubes.

We have applied agarose gel electrophoresis (AGE) to single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) that have been pre-reacted with metallic-selective ionic radicals and then re-suspended with sodium cholate (SC) surfactant to obtain highly purified (up to 98%) semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs). The proposed combination method exploits the preferential reactivity with the metallic...

Engineering carbon nanotubes and nanotube circuits using electrical breakdown.

Carbon nanotubes display either metallic or semiconducting properties. Both large, multiwalled nanotubes (MWNTs), with many concentric carbon shells, and bundles or "ropes" of aligned single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs), are complex composite conductors that incorporate many weakly coupled nanotubes that each have a different electronic structure. Here we demonstrate a simple and reliable method fo...

Vectorial Growth of Metallic and Semiconducting Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes

A new approach for vectorial growth of single-wall carbon nanotube arrays is presented. The origin of growth is defined by patterning the catalyst nanoparticles, while the direction of growth is defined by a local electric field parallel to the substrate. Statistical analysis of the nanotube angular distribution indicates that field-directed growth can discriminate between metallic and semicond...

A simple chemical route to selectively eliminate metallic carbon nanotubes in nanotube network devices.

Semiconducting-only single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) network field effect transistors (FETs) have been fabricated by selectively reacting all the metallic SWNTs in the devices with diazonium reagents in a controlled manner. We have shown that the concentration of diazonium reagents used is crucial for selectively eliminating metallic SWNTs and keeping semiconducting ones intact. Excessive a...

Bolometric Properties of Semiconducting and Metallic Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Composite Films

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) have shown interesting bolometric properties, making them good candidates for the detection of infrared and terahertz radiation. However, little has been reported on the bolometric characteristics of SWNT as a function of their chirality or the possible influence of composite morphology on these properties. The separation of SWNTs based on chirality allows...
